For the first time, they started talking about the new Subaru Ascent crossover back in 2017, when the manufacturer first presented the novelty at an exhibition in Los Angeles. The largest in the brand's crossover lineup, the car reminds many of its fellows. As for me, the appearance in the full sense of the word is taken from the new Forester, but it is only stretched in size in all directions, meanwhile, it still remains fresh and attractive.

The Subaru Ascent three-row crossover is already available for purchase in the US. In Europe and the CIS countries, the appearance of new items is expected in the near future. In all likelihood, the demand for the car will be, the indicator of that is the outdated Tribeca, the place of which should be taken by the updated Ascent. Tribeca, although it is outdated morally and physically, is nevertheless not very badly in demand in the auto market. Now let's take a closer look at the new crossover from Subaru, as there is something to compare with.

Exterior Subaru Ascent

As I said, the appearance of the new Subaru Ascent reminds many of the latest generation Forester, and it's true. The company's designers decided to stylize the models under one image, thereby making a well-recognizable design among other cars. The front of the crossover is distinguished by a large radiator grille with chrome strips, and modern LED optics, with cutouts closer to the center. The optics are based on C-shaped daytime running lights installed along the contour, as well as pronounced lenses. As for the front bumper, it reminds many of the same new Forester, only instead of vertical foglights, round ones with a chrome-plated horizontal insert are installed.

A characteristic detail that betrays the Subaru Ascent's attitude to the crossover class is a black plastic body kit and an additional grille in the center. Frankly speaking, there is no special zest in the front, everything looks simple and well recognizable. Although this could not be said about the concept, which was ready to be on the conveyor immediately after the show.

Long side Subaru Askent gives out the presence of three rows of seats in the cabin, in particular the last side window. It is worth noting that this is one of the brand's largest crossovers, with three rows of seats. Like the front end, there is no special design here, a standard plastic body kit at the very bottom, chrome glass edging and side mirrors outside the door panel.

In contrast to the overall design of the Subaru Ascent side section, the mirrors received a good functional set. The standard list includes an LED turn signal repeater, automatic folding, heating and an unusual LED backlight in the far upper corner. Such an innovation can help you find a car in a parking lot at night or illuminate the doors when you approach. On the one hand, a plus, but as for me this is just an additional cost, of course, it also affects the total cost. Such a technology could easily be implemented using standard technologies (repeaters of turns on the mirrors, an emergency parking signal, etc.).

By color, the body of the new Subaru Ascent can be painted in:

The list is not bad and there is plenty to choose from, besides, many shades are not "flashy", which means that the overall design is made in a more austere style. The basis for the new Subaru Ascent crossover was 18 ″ alloy wheels with 245/60 tires. 20 ″ with 245/50 tires will be installed as an option or in top trim levels. I would like to note right away that more than 20 disks will not fit, since the wheel arches simply do not allow.

The rear of the Subaru Ascent crossover lacks many individual lines. In particular, a large tailgate is installed. The very top is decorated with a massive spoiler coupled with LED stop repeater. As for the rear feet, just like the front, the LED elements served as the basis. Part of the stops are located on the body part, the other part on the trunk lid.

On the decorative details of the rear of the Subaru Ascent, one can note chrome inserts, nameplates and a small recess for license plates. The design is further emphasized by the rear bumper, which is partly painted in the body color and partly made of black plastic. Although many say that this is not an innovation and many manufacturers have not used this for a long time, it can be said with firmness that such a layout will live much longer and will be more reliable.

The last detail of the Subaru Askent exterior that would be worth considering is the roof of the crossover. The basic configuration is always simple, so let's consider the top-end option. It includes: side rails (for attaching an additional trunk), a panoramic roof with a sliding front and a small antenna in the form of a shark fin. Simple and tasteful, as they say. As for me, the appearance of the new Subaru Ascent crossover is not unique and resembles many other models of the brand, on the other hand, the body looks massive, with pronounced features.

The interior of the new Subaru Ascent

Despite the fact that the appearance of the Suabru Ascent crossover is not unique in many ways, the interior of the novelty still received its own style and character. Standard fit formula 2+3+3, it turns out 8 seats, for a fee you can change to proportion 2+2+3, that is, two separate seats for passengers in the second row. It would seem that there will not be a lot of space in the cabin, but it turned out that there is plenty of it even for passengers in the third row. Another plus for the passengers of the third row is the rear doors, the engineers helped them open 75 degrees, thereby making it easier to board the third row.

As for me, no less modifications were made to the front panel of the Subaru Ascent crossover, one might even say that it is somewhat reminiscent of Volvo cars. The central part, as standard, was taken under the 6.5 "touchscreen display of the multimedia system, as an option, they offer to install 8". According to the manufacturer, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay will serve as the basis for multimedia, which will immediately remove the problem from the driver in the selection of a gadget. For convenience, a row of functional buttons for security and comfort systems was placed above the display, and the onboard display is even higher. Although it is small, it plays an important role for the driver, showing all the necessary parameters and characteristics.

So all the same, than Subaru is so reminiscent of Volvo in the cabin. The answer is banal and simple, the designers pulled off the basic style of the center console, in particular the display, under it the audio control panel for 14 speakers and the oblong air ducts to the left and right of the multimedia. The center console ends with a climate control panel, by the way, it can be of different zoning depending on the configuration. The transitional part between the tunnel and the console was equipped with wireless charging, USB ports and a 12V outlet. As for the tunnel between the front seats, it looks quite simple and even sparse. A minimum of functionality and variety. The list includes a transmission lever, two cupholders, an electromechanical handbrake and an armrest. On the reverse side, the armrest is equipped with USB connectors, a socket and a climate control panel. Speaking of cup holders, there are 19 of them around the perimeter of the interior, for me, for such a crossover this is a bit overkill. Often the number is double, but this time they decided to deviate from the rules, the difference was in the third row of seats, on the one hand, passengers received two cup holders, and on the other, three. Why this is so, no one can explain, but the passengers of one side were clearly cheated.

The interior of the Subaru Ascent 2019-2020 crossover itself turned out to be more unique than concocted from the already known models of the brand.The front seats received a high backrest, good lateral support and a good functional set. Mechanical or electrical adjustment, including the area of ​​the lumbar and head restraints. Relative to the second row of Subaru Ascent seats, a lot depends on the owner. The standard is a sofa for 3 seats and a folding ratio of 40/20/40, but for a fee, you can install two separate seats, exactly the same as in the first row, and with the same functionality.

The third row of Subaru Ascent seats, without exception, is designed for three seats. If necessary, they can be folded, thereby increasing the luggage compartment. An important point is the interior trim. Basic configurations of Subaru Askent received fabric upholstery, top-end options, or as an option, only leather upholstery. Additionally, the buyer is offered to choose the color of the stitching and options for inserts around the perimeter (inserts made of wood, polished aluminum or plastic imitating the structure). The interior colors are black, beige, brown or gray.

I would also like to tell you about the Subaru Ascent driver's seat, as for me, it looks bright and modern. The instrument panel remains analog, with a color display in the center. The designers minimized the gauges by combining the tachometer with the temperature gauge and the speedometer with the fuel level. As for the Subaru Acent steering wheel, it was also updated, one might even say it was stuffed to the fullest. High-quality leather upholstery, modern design and a large functional set, including paddle shifters. It would seem that all these are trifles, but in the most difficult moment it will be a godsend for the driver.

As for me, the interior of the new Subaru Ascent will be a pleasant experience. Roomy, functional and truly a family car. Every detail is thought out, while there is nothing superfluous, for which you would have to overpay money.

Specifications Subaru Ascent

The basis for the new Subaru Ascent crossover was the upgraded SGP (Subaru Global Platform) platform, stretched and reinforced. It is this platform that engineers have already used for the new Subaru XV and Impreza, so we have something to compare and understand how the car behaves. Regarding the suspension of the new Ascent, here is the classic version, there are MacPherson struts in the front, and a multi-link suspension in the rear. Thanks to this combination and arrangement of parts, Symmetrical AWD all-wheel drive is standard.

No less interest is the power unit of the Subaru Askent. The company's engineers did not hesitate for a long time, installing a new turbocharged gasoline unit of the FA family. Among the main advantages of such an engine are the intercooler, direct injection of fuel into the cylinders, as well as the modern gas distribution system SDAVCS (Subaru Dual Active Valve Control System). According to the available information, the volume of the unit is 2.4 liters. The maximum that you can squeeze out of it is 264 horses, with a torque of 376 Nm. It turns out that the average consumption of such an engine is 10-11 liters per 100 km of track, and with a full tank it can cover about 800 km without refueling.

The transmission of torque to the wheels of the crossover is provided by a Lineartronic variator, as well as an all-wheel drive system. Brake system Subaru Ascent disc, both front and rear. I would like to say that the characteristics of the new crossover are not bad, but there is no variety of engines. The CVT is also not particularly in demand, I would like to see a modern automatic transmission. For example, something taken from the Forester, Outback or Impreza.

Price and configuration Subaru Ascent

The appearance of the new Subaru Ascent crossover in Russia and Europe is expected towards the end of spring 2019, although, according to the manufacturer, the start of sales was scheduled for late March or early April. The new crossover is already available in 4 trim levels: Basic, Premium, Limited and Touring.

I think that the price and configuration of the Subaru Ascent of the European version or for the Russian Federation will differ minimally. The manufacturer promised to take into account the climatic conditions, road surface and reviews of the owners of other models of this brand. If we talk about the new Subaru Ascent, then, as a family crossover, it may well replace the outdated Tribeca.

As for me, the manufacturer took into account the wishes of the owners of Tribeca as much as possible, added modern technologies and made a spacious interior for comfortable movement. It's good that the manufacturer offers many additional accessories for the new Subaru Ascent crossover in the form of footrests, a roof rack or small decorative details. There is also a small minus, the appearance is not very original and reminds many of the same Forester or Outback of the latest generations, although the interior of the novelty turned out to be more original.
