Skoda products are widely known and are very popular among the domestic consumer, which is facilitated by a competent ratio of price, quality and technical characteristics of the cars produced. For this reason, each Czech novelty is of great interest both from the automotive media and auto critics and ordinary people.
The presentation of the updated hatchback Skoda Rapid Spaceback 2017, held at this year's Geneva Motor Show, was no exception, which received a number of cosmetic improvements to the exterior and interior, as well as a new more economical engine.
Recall that for the first time the Spaceback model was presented by the Czechs in 2013. The car is based on the Rapid five-door sedan platform, but unlike the latter, it has a more compact body. The company itself positions the model as the longest hatchback in the class, but it seems to us that with the same success it may well claim the title of a compact station wagon.
Be that as it may, the company managed to create a stylish, modern and roomy car, the restyled version of which promises to bring sales to an even higher level. Well, let's figure out exactly what innovations the updated Skoda Rapid Spaceback has prepared for potential buyers.
Exterior Skoda Rapid Spaceback
The main changes in the exterior of the car fell on its front end, where the manufacturer placed new bi-xenon optics with built-in Z-shaped LEDs for running lights, an updated false radiator grille and a front bumper.
In comparison with its predecessor, the bumper of the novelty has received a slightly modified air intake and fully LED fog lights, which began to look more harmonious and elegant. The hood of the car, as before, is distinguished by the presence of a stylish relief, which gives the car a more status look.
The model's profile received noticeably fewer changes. In particular, the repeaters of the turns from the front fenders moved to the side mirrors, the wheels got a more stylish design of alloy wheels, and the side skirts got a stylish plastic insert. Otherwise, we have the same Rapid Spaceback, with heavily heaped massive C-pillars and a sloping roofline.
The sirloin of the car is made in the corporate style of the company, with its characteristic laconicism and severity. The side lights, as before, have a C-shape, but unlike their predecessor, they received LED filling. At the bottom of the rear bumper is a stylish plastic trim and an unremarkable exhaust pipe.
The outer dimensions of the "Spaceback" are slightly inferior to the classic sedan "Rapid" and have the following characteristics:

The drag coefficient, depending on the level of equipment, is 0.293-0.302 Cx, which had a good effect on the economy and acoustic comfort of passengers. Especially for the CIS countries, the ground clearance has been increased from 136 to 150 mm, which allows the machine to cope with road irregularities with greater confidence.
Customers can choose from nine body color options, as well as several design variations of R15-17 alloy wheels. Moreover, the buyer will be able to equip the car with a fashionable panoramic roof, which allows filling the interior with additional light and making it visually more spacious.
The interior of the updated Rapid Spaceback
In contrast to the exterior, the interior of the hatchback has received a more impressive number of changes. The driver's seat got a new multifunctional three-spoke steering wheel, sporty cut from the bottom, as well as a new dashboard, which, traditionally for Skoda cars, is highly informative. The air duct deflectors were changed, and a new media information system was registered in the central part of the dashboard, which can synchronize with smartphones based on iOS and Android, as well as the ability to install a SIM card.
Skoda designers did not pass by the microclimate control unit, which received a new design, but retained convenient and intuitive control.
The quality of materials, despite the relative availability of the car, is at a height, as is the quality of fit of parts, and buyers are offered one of several interior trim variations: fabric, combined and leather. The color scheme of the interior is still presented in black, gray and beige shades. Ergonomics are also pleasing - all buttons and switches are where you expect them to be.
The front seats are comfortable and have a sufficient number of adjustments, lateral support may not seem enough to someone, but given the class and nature of the car, it is difficult to consider this a disadvantage. There is a long armrest between the seats of the first row, which somewhat complicates the emergency use of the electromechanical handbrake.
The back sofa readily accepts three passengers, and even the third passenger is more than at ease here.
The volume of the trunk, in comparison with the liftback, is 135 liters less and is equal to 415 liters in the stowed state and 1380 liters - with the second row seats down. The trunk cannot be called a record, but its volume surpasses most direct competitors, while in its underground there was a place for a full-fledged spare wheel of a repair kit.
In general, the interior of the updated Rapid Spaceback has become more modern, high-quality and technologically advanced, which will certainly be reflected in the perception and sales volume of the model, which promise to beat the results of its predecessor.

The new Rapid Spaceback is based on the Volkswagen Polo platform, however, most of the suspension elements have been borrowed from other Skoda models. In particular, the MacPherson struts were taken from the Fabia, and the rear roll beam from the first generation Octavia liftback.
The line of power units is represented by diesel and gasoline engines, familiar from the previous generation of the model, with the exception of a 1.2-liter gasoline engine, which was replaced by a more technologically advanced and economical 1-liter engine.
Gasoline engines are presented:
- The new 1-liter three-cylinder TSI petrol engine with a capacity of 95 and 110 "horses", which can be aggregated with a mechanical or robotic gearbox. The dynamic characteristics of a car with such motors: acceleration from 0 to 100 in 11 and 9.8 seconds. respectively, the maximum speed - 184 (200) km / h? and the average fuel consumption varies within 4.3-4.5 l / 100 km of the highway.
- 1.4-liter TSI, generating 125 "mares" and allowing the car to accelerate to a maximum of 205 km / h, while accelerating to "hundreds" of the car will take 8.9 seconds.
- 1.6-liter MPI with a capacity of 90 and 105 "horses", capable of accelerating the car to 100 km / h in 10.3-11.4 seconds. and consumes from 5.8 to 6 liters of fuel in the combined cycle. Such an engine can be equipped with a 5-level manual or automatic transmission with 6 or 7 speeds.
Diesel engines are represented by 1.4 and 1.6-liter TDI engines, which allow squeezing out 90 or 116 "mares", respectively, as well as accelerating the hatchback to "hundreds" in 11.6 and 9.9 seconds. respectively. The maximum speed, as shown by the Skoda Rapid Spaceback review, is 183 km / h for the younger and 201 km / h for the older diesel.Note that, as before, there is no reason to expect the appearance of diesel engines in Russia, which is caused by the low quality of the domestic diesel engine.
The steering of the car is represented by an electric booster, and that braking is answered by disc brakes located on all four wheels.

The manufacturer emphasizes that the updated Spaceback received a wider range of active / passive safety systems, which significantly improved the overall level of passenger safety. Among them:

Unfortunately, the officially updated Skoda Rapid Spaceback in Russia is not yet expected, which we have already seen from its predecessor, but the company does not exclude that in the near future the car may still appear in our country. At the same time, it is not known what the price of the Skoda Rapid Spaceback will be in Russia, if the manufacturer nevertheless decides to bring the model to the domestic market. We can only assume that its price will not differ much from the Rapid 2017 liftback, which we offer at a price of 10.17 thousand dollars (604 thousand rubles).
It is assumed that the Rapid Spaceback will be offered in trim levels similar to the usual Rapid (Entry, Active, Ambition and Style), and already in the basic equipment will be offered:

The updated Skoda Rapid Spaceback received not only a more modern and stylish appearance, but also got a better, technologically advanced and presentable interior. Moreover, the novelty has received a new gasoline engine that combines the optimal ratio of power and fuel consumption, which is extremely important against the backdrop of constantly rising fuel prices.
Unfortunately, the hatchback has not yet been presented in Russia, but we very much hope that the manufacturer will revise its plans to conquer the domestic market, where, in our opinion, the car would be very successful.
